My Home Town..

I am often asked where I am from, I grew up in a large town in Southern California called Redlands. Redlands is located in San Bernardino County, about a 40 minute drive from Palm Springs, Big Bear, L.A and Orange County. Growing up we were spoiled by our location, my friends and I would escape to L.A. or Palm Springs on impromptu trips all the time. Redlands holds a special place in my heart. This town is very old and charming. I recently took some images of homes that inspire me, these are homes I could walk to from the house I grew up in. There is so much history and character, you can lose yourself in the large sprawling properties and minute details.

Kimberly Crest

Kimberly Crest, a picturesque French chateau style home built in 1897, is a well preserved example of the Victorian Era in California. The 7,000 square foot, three-story chateau sits on a six and one quarter acre estate two miles south of downtown Redlands.

Originally built by Mrs. Cornelia A. Hill, a widow from New York State, the home was purchased by J. Alfred Kimberly (a co-founder of the Kimberly-Clark Corporation) and Helen Cheney Kimberly in 1905. Their widowed daughter, Mary Kimberly Shirk, lived in the home from 1920 until her death in 1979.

The house’s unique features include a French revival parlor complete with gilt furniture and silk damask wall coverings. Terraced Italian gardens, orange groves and ponds surround this historic landmark home. The lily ponds feature radiant Koi; vivid red, pink and yellow lilies against deep green majestic lotus blossoms; and papyrus. In 1998, KSA was made an honorary member of the Inland Koi Society who maintains the lily ponds at Kimberly Crest.

In 1963 there was a community effort to raise money to purchase Prospect Park (a 39 acre botanical park east and adjacent to Kimberly Crest) for the City of Redlands. To motivate support for this project, Mrs. Shirk promised to give her home to the “people of Redlands,” if the needed money was raised. The park was acquired in 1968. The following year the Kimberly-Shirk Association, a non-profit corporation was formed. In her will, Mrs. Shirk left the house to the Association for the people of Redlands.

Morey Mansion

David and Sarah Morey built Morey Mansion in 1890 from the profits of her citrus tree nursery. There is no known architect for the house. David himself custom built many of the charming Victorian features.
The city of Redlands was incorporated in the l880’s and is home to many well-maintained Victorian and turn-of-the-century houses. The house is set on 1.7 acres on the bluff overlooking San Timoteo Canyon.

Nick Metropolis

Have you met Nick? If not ... you should. While driving on La Brea one late afternoon my attention was caught by what looked like the ultimate flea market of goodies. I had to stop. I was greeted by Nick, owner of Metropolis, a wonderland of statement pieces and one of a kind finds.

Nick told stories of where many of his treasures came from, stories that ranged from old barber shops in Hollywood to the movie makers themselves. "It is Cheech and Chong goes to Beverly Hills at times", Nick says, when talking about one of his many A-list clients.

There are some spectacular finds priced at a real value, all most pieces need is a little love and creativity to bring it back into style. This is now rated my favorite place to shop in L.A.

Nick Metropolis has been on La Brea for over 10 years. Located at 100 So. La Brea in L.A. 90036
